Special Issue: Operations Research/Operations Management for Sustainability
Aims and Scope
Sustainable development has been attracting the ever-increasing attention from all kinds of stakeholders in the world and is becoming an important strategical objective for all organizations. Moving towards sustainability is considered as a significant social challenge that pertains to law, urban planning & transport, local & individual lifestyles and ethical consumerism. In particular, it is widely-accepted that a proper balance of economic, environmental and social objectives needs to be managed in organizations’ global operations to survive and remain competitive. This triple-bottom-line perspective is central to organizational sustainability strategies & operations and requires radical changes in the management of all kind of organizations around the world.
In the last century, operations research (OR) provided tremendous power for production development by modeling real industrial engineering problems and solving the problems through modeling, statistical analysis and mathematical optimization. With the significant improvements resulting from OR applications, it was utilized in not only industrial engineering problems but also in the broad industrial engineering and associated communities. On the other hand, operations management (OM) makes the business operations efficient in terms of using as few resources as needed for an effective meeting of customer requirements. In particular, the computerized methodology could improve efficiency of OR/OM and thus be employed in many real applications.
To achieve sustainable development, organizations seek to make use of knowledge from both theory developments and real applications. As problems have become more complex and difficult to solve, decision-makers are aware of the need for a fresh body of knowledge and an improved set of solution approaches that integrate disruptive technologies and mathematical models to address a wide variety of business and operations management problems under the climate change and sustainability domain.
This special issue aims to publish manuscripts within the domain of sustainability. Submissions should develop and analyze analytical models, present case studies, or apply simulation approaches on operations research/operations management for Sustainability. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
- Disaster management and humanitarian logistics
- Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing
- Resilient, sustainable and smart cities
- Low carbon economics
- Sustainable transportation
- Food security
The editors of the special issue intend to publish a range of different topics and reserve the right to limit the number of papers included in any one topic.
Manuscripts should be submitted via Elsevier Editorial System http://ees.elsevier.com/caie/. Please make sure you select “Special Issue” as Article Type and “SI: Sustainability” as Section/Category. Manuscripts should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere., To prepare your manuscript, please follow the format provided in EES webpage referred to above under “Guide for Authors”. Papers will be reviewed according to the rigorously review process followed by Computers and Industrial Engineering.
The full paper submission deadline is November 30, 2017. Submissions to the special issue will be processed immediately upon receipt. The Special Issue is scheduled for publication in 2018.
